Hi all,
does anyone know where i can purchase tahitian moon sand. I live in Hertfordshire, but am happy to order and have it delivered if theres an internet company who has it. I think i would prefer it rather than limpopo.
Thanks

I ordered mine from ebay. Just keep in mind this stuff is magnetic, due to the stuff they use to color the sand. It's totally harmful to the fish, but it can have a devastating effect to filter impellers if you let it get sucked up. Magnetic cleaners may also grab ahold of it, and scratch up the tank. Just a word of warning.

One quick thing about Tahitian Moon Sand -- it's not safe with "soft bellied fish". The CaribSea website used to state this explicitly, but they've changed the site and got rid of the ticks-and-crosses table that showed which substrate was good or bad in what regards.

The problem with Tahitian Moon Sand is that it's very sharp and jagged. I believe it's a byproduct of glass manufacture. So while it's a great substrate for tanks with midwater fish or species that only occasionally root about at the bottom (such as barbs) it would be a terrible substrate for use with Corydoras, loaches, spiny eels, etc.

I'm sure people will think "Hey, I have Corydoras and I use Tahitian Moon Sand and my Corydoras are fine!" That may well be true. But look at their whiskers? If their whiskers are shorter than they should be -- which is something like half an inch or more -- then something's irritated them and allowed bacterial infection to set in. I wouldn't recommend Tahitian Moon Sand in tanks with bottom-dwelling fish, and until they "dumbed down" their website, nor did the manufacturers.

Cheers, Neale

iv got some in my second tank and iv fell in love with it, its ten times better and nicer to look at than the black gravel. bought mine online from surrey pet supplies
20lb which has covered my 45L tank with about 2-3 inches all over was £17 delivered

I was going to go down the Caribsea TMS but ended up getting Eco-Complete instead (which I'm really pleased with) but my point here is Surrey Pet Supplies :good: did me a great deal and was the cheapest I could find for sure.

Thanks for info, as i have corys i think i will get the limpopo as that seems better for cories. I have a black gravel which i was assured by the LFS it was ok for corys! they have all lost their barbs so it obviously wasnt!
