Hi, Can anyone please help me with my daughters cardinals tetras.
We bought a new 48 litre tank a couple of months ago, set it up, seeded the filter, left it for a few weeks, and after looking on web sites to try and choose the best fish I gave up a bit bewilder by the information and I visited all our local aquatics shops to find the one that seemed the best for advice.

We were sold-
6 Cardinal tetras
1 dalamtion molly
1 madagascan rainbow fish

But when we got the fish home the molly started to attack the cardinal tetras and they started dying. After checking the internet sites discovered the tetras prone to problems when being transported so thought the might be ill, tested the water and all seemed fine, did a partial water change and treated with a generic treatment. Also found out that the molly and the rainbow fish shouldn't be kept alone or in a small tank.

We lost 5 of the tetras (most ending up looking a bit poorly and bitten and stuck on the filter). However the one remaining cardinal became quite settled and seems really healthy so we put a few more hiding spots into the tank, did another partial water change, took the molly and rainbow back to the fish shop and came home with -
5 Cardinal tetras (as friends for 1 remaining)
6 Platys

The original tetra seemed to love having some friends and all seemed fine, less than a week later 5 new tetras now dead, some were hidding in there new hidout and some stuck in the filter again (the original tetra is still doing well). I tried going to two different pet shops for advice but they were even less helpful. I dont really want to take back my daughters 1 survior tetra or leave him sad and lonely but dont want to keep killing more fish, does any one know what I might be doing wrong?

Thanks

PS The platys were a bit of a worry too, a couple of them hidding for a day or two, lying on the bottom of the tank and have whitish stringy poo, the internet suggested worms and have ordered the medicine but they are all at least now feeding well and look happy - should I still give them the medicine when it arrives? One has a big looking belly could this mean the poo is constipation so I thought I should give them some peas or should I now worried about babies (for some reason, I have been so worried about dead fish the possibility of babies or what to do with them hadn't occurred to me and I'm now wishing we had bought a dog instead).

I was told to start the tank off with Platies-which i did, then a few mollys..........but not to start with Tetra's

It worked fine for me.................I have been told Tetras are very unstable for a newish tank.

I have had numerous other problems and also thought a dog would have been easier........but keep going and it will be fine..............just have plently of money !!!
