hi

i recently completed a ich treatment in my tank and now i have noticed one of my cardinals has what appears to be a clearish white round puffy thing on it's tail. now i know what ich looks like and this is not ich. i also noticed that one of my mollies is developing a white on her tail not sure what to do. any idea what this is??? i guess you can say it looks like cotton. i tried taking it off with a tweezer but it is very hard to grab the fluff it's slimy:s

should i start treatment of Fungus Cure by API? i finished the ich treatment this past weekend, how long shoul di wait to start this next one?

I had the same problem when I posted about my sick ADF. I'm going to go do a little research and see what I can suggest! I wish I knew more off the top of my head, but I'll be sure to get back to you. :)

Okay. I did a search for cardinal tetra diseases and came up with a site that had a decent detailing of common fish illnesses. You'll find their listing here.

From this page on fish fungi:

Water moulds are saprotrophs. Saprotrophs are organisms that obtain their nutrients from non-living organic matter, which in this case, will be fish waste, uneaten food, dead fish etc. However, they are opportunistic parasites that will take advantage on stressed or weakened fish. Water moulds are made of a tangled group of filaments called hyphae. As the group of hyphae grows, it becomes compressed tufts that are collectively called mycelium. This mass of fungi filaments can be seen clearly without the aid of a microscope. The moulds reproduce by releasing thousands of spores into the water. Spores of fungi are always present in aquariums and ponds and cannot be eliminated.
This sounds like a very likely culprit, since you said you just finished treating for ich. More from the fungus page that might be helpful:

Fungus can be somewhat difficult to treat, however, our recommendation in treatment would be Maracyn, Maracyn II or Rid Fungus. A 50% water change should be made before the dosage is applied as partial water changes cannot be done during the time in which treatment is in process as it weakens the medication. When the treatment is complete, a 50% should be done again to help remove the medication.
I hope this helps! If you need anything else, just let me know. I'm not all too knowledgeable on fish diseases, but I'm good at digging for helpful information. Good luck, and good health to your fishes.

ty for the information yay! i started treatment using API Fungus Cure. these were the steps it says.

remove active carbon
for each 10 gals of water empty one packet directly into aquarium
repeate after 48hrs
wait another 48hrs and change 25% of the water

so i added 2 packets of this medication since i have a 20gal aquarium. i started the treatment yesterday at 1pm and now it is 1:20pm making it 24hrs.. not sure why the water is so green still. did i over dose or something??? strange!

Some meds do colour the water.
Is there plenty of aeration in the tank.

the filter is set to max and there is alot of movement coming from it. i hope it doesn't harm the fish it's starting to smell like ammonia or something.

Some meds can knock water stats I would check your water stats.

okay i will do that asap. if there are any problems with the water stats what do you suggest i do??

Water changes and add the correct amount of med back to the water removed.
Good luck.

water stats are good no problems. water is still very very green not sure what to do. it kind of worries me. i have a platy that is pregnant in there as well.

The water is probably green because the medication contains a dye product, check the label for malachite green or methylene blue. I personally think these do very little even for true fungus and what you have sounds like what killed two of my bettas last week. That was identified as columnaris. Give us some clear photos and we'll be able to tell you whether it is columnaris or a fungal disease.

it says

Victoria green B & 30mg Acriflavine.

i can't take pic my camera won't do it properly. i already treated my tank with Ich 2 weeks ago but this fluff started on my tetras tail so i did this fungus cure atm.

today at 1pm marks 48hrs. i know it said to treat again but this water is really bothering me now with it's green. so i think i'll do a 50% water change and do only 1 pack not 2 packs.

For columnaris in the united states maracyn one and two.
