Hi all,
Checked out my fish tonight and one of my cardinal tetras has what appears to be a lump on its rear on the left hand side. It appears like a white thread of cotton but is encased in what I can only describe as a spider web cocoon (if that makes sense). It's a see through bubble with this thread like worm in it (it looks a bit like the poo's they do but white).

Any ideas. I had a look through a book and found the cottonwool fungus thing, but it doesn't really look like cotton wool as the lump itself is see through. My wife just thinks it's something stuck to him. Should I try to remove it?

Cheers guys (and gals)

DONT TRY TO REMOVE IT

It'd be almost impossible with such a small fish and it could really hurt it. Plus it'll be as scared as hell if you try to chase it round the tank

Fish Symptoms (include full description including lesion, color, location, fish behavior): See Original Post
Volume and Frequency of water changes: 40% every week
Chemical Additives or Media in your tank: 10x Biorb Silk plants / A couple of ornaments and rocks (all been in there since the beginning)Tank inhabitants: 5x Black ruby barbs, 4x guppies, 5x cardinal tetra's, 3x Balloon molly's, 3x swordtails, 2x cockatoo cichlids, 2x pearl gourami's
Recent additions to your tank (living or decoration): The most recent addition were the 2x pearl gourami's which were added a month agoExposure to chemicals: Every water change I add API stress coat and stress zyme. For the past month, I have also been adding Nitrate minus on the advice from LFS as my nitrate is 80ppm out of the tap. It has made no difference. I still have quite a bad brown algae problem (LFS thought this was down to Nitrate)

After hunting around on Google for the last couple of hours. I have finally found the problem...it's something called Dermocystidium or Dermosporidia.

Here's a link to a thread which includes a picture.

Most cases nothing to worry about, and will drop off in it's own time.
Hope this helps someone else.
