Hi all,

I was wondering is it best to have a Carbon filter in your tank . We have a Rio 180 and at the moment we don't use one but i've read and be told elsewhere it's best to use one with Cichlids(Lake Malawi)?

Thank you.

Personally I avoid carbon.

Carbon removes most of the toxins out the water, but these toxins are used in the filtration system in the nitrogen cycle.
So if you use carbon, you then starve the filter and cause a mini cycle.

So once the carbon is full or you remove it your get an ammonia spike and if prolonged can cause problem to the fish.

If you have an established tank and do regular water changes then you should not have any problems doing with out.

so its best to take it out of my filter then? and replace with more normal filter?

Yes i would, unless you have a problem in your tank.
if you have poor water or problems it good to have to hand. but not all the time.

there is absolutely no need for carbon in your filter during daily operation. you should only use it when removing meds/ chemicals from your tank. otherwise, avoid it all together.
