At the moment, my ehiem is hold, ceramic media, some brown balls of some sort (ehiems make). Seachem purigen and basic pollywool. and it works a treat, no spikes.But i keep readin most of u lot put LR in it instead ?? is this effective?? but also wld u need lighting...?

The LR wouldn't need lighting, just a good flow rate (provided by the cannister's impellor). The LR will help deal with nitrates which the ceramic won't.

It would become a good 'pod breeding area too; as the fish would not be able to pick them off. Whether any pods would make it to the tank alive is a point of debate.

You don't need lighting for the biofiltration processes that occur on live rock, rubble or otherwise. SH
