so... i have a 20g long, and it's slowly becoming heavily planted... i was wondering, i now have an hob biowheel filter (without the biowheel) and my water is pretty clear. i have some tanning of the water from driftwood, but i'm sure that will clear eventually. my question is more along the lines of how necessary is it to upgrade my filter if at all, and/or what are the benefits of a canister filter over what i have already?

In only a 20 gallon tank I wouldn't spend the extra money for a canistar filter. In tanks up to 50 gallons or so I would stick to a hob. Cannister aree by far better, the hold massive amounts of meduia and clean trhe water much better with less water flow. Depending on your biowheel model there could still be room for improvement in the filtration area, but in my opinion a canister is not the answer
And In my experience I wouldn't count on those tanens clearing out I have heard varnishing the wood will work though

hmm.. thanks for the advice. i, unfortunately, have a shopping problem and i went today and looked at the eheim's... very tempting. i think the classics seem better than the pro II's, however, i've heard they're quieter and more reliable... any opinions on that one? what the hell am i doing? it's only a 20g!
