canister filters

can someone please explain to me how canister filters work like I am dumb. i cant find anything that describes it well. Also if anyone has a picture of how the canister filter looks setup with their tank that would be awesome.

The water comes in through a tube from the tank, goes into canister then forced through all the filter media. (usally pads and other stuff) then the water is taken back to the tank via another tube.
