I've thought about getting one but I have a few questions:

Are they good? Do they do a good job?

I went to a fish store and scanned the prices of the refills for it, They are kinda expensive. How may times will I have to replace the carbon and crap................weekly, monthly etc?

yes they are definatly better than internals - i recomend the tetratec range - the media dosent have to be changed that ofter as some people only clean them every 2 months!!!

Good luck

Carbon needs to be replaced quite often but I'm not sure how often as I don't use it myself. The mechanical and biological media doesn't need replacing often at all. It just needs rinsing in tank water every month or two depending on your tanks stocking level to clean debris out.

The filter floss will need replacing every time you clean the filter as it cannot be cleaned by rinsing in tank water, but it's far cheaper than the other media.

I like the eheim classic line, its the only line on the market where the water has to enter through the bottom. Eheims are widely regarded as the best on the market. People have been running these filters for 10+ years. The only downside is the green tubes are rather ugly, and there are no filter media trays. Canister filters do a great job.
