My head is spinning. What is the best biobug media you can use in your canister filter? Since that media is seldom, if ever, changed it would make sense to get the best and leave it there.

I just checked on two media and did some calculations.

Eheim Ehfisubstrat ($12/liter or $9/liter if you buy 5 liters)

Eheim says its 18,300 square feet per gallon. So 18300 divided by 4 = 4575 but we’ll cut it down because of the liter/quart conversion so we’ll call it 4,500 sf per liter. That’s almost twice what Matrix claims but I guess the Eheim media is about twice as expensive.

Matrix media ($6/liter if you buy 4 liters)

Claims surface area to be Each liter of Matrix™ provides as much surface
162 m per liter. So 16 x 16 = 252 square meters. To convert to square feet we multiply by 9 and get a bio area of 2,304 sf per liter.

Would some of you like to make specific product recommendations for bio media in a cansiter filter for a freshwater tank? Thanks!
