Caniter filters have a intake tube which pumps the water into a canister located out of the tank then it goes through a pipe to the bottom of the filter and is pumped through various layers of the filter. normally thier is 3 sponge layers and substraite layers with activated charcole. Then it comes out the top or bottom into another tube and back into the tank. They save space (canisters are norammly hidden under something) but are much more expensive because you have to buy alot more then just floss and charcole.
