I posted this in bettas but thought I would get a quicker response here.

Can you gather sand from a lake and use that, after sifting through it and cleaning it heavily (ie: boiling)?

Is it easier to maintain than gravel? How easily does it get stirred up? Shall I just maintain it with a siphon? Is there any other way to maintain other than with a siphon?

I take it that this sand will be used in a betta tank or bowl and will not have any other fish. If so, it will very rarely be stirred up. Best way to clean it that I know of is with a sihpon.

Have any tank specs to give us?
