im hopefully gonna be upgrading my ten gall soon to a 29 gal. right now i have in there 3 ottos, 1 cory, 1 dwarf plattty, 1 male guppy, 1 female gold molly, 2 young plattie, 6 young black mollies, 8 young guppies, and in my 20 gal 1 young platty and 6 baby guppies. btw by young i mean anywhere from a few days to a few months old.

once i get the 29 gal this is what i would like:

bottom:
3 ottos and 3 corries

middle: 5-7 harliquins and 1 angel(which i will move to a bigger tank when its too big, i can get ones a bit smaller than "quarter sized".....mine just died this morning :-( so i do want one again)

top: 3 platties, 1 dwarf platy, 1 male + 2 female mollies, 1 male sword, 3 male and 6-9 female guppies

i have a feeling this is would be overstalked(im not gonna add em all at once of course)so can you help me limit it down a bit to a good level....btw i have never follewed the "1 inch" rule much just so you know.

edit: almost for got....if possible i would also like to get a bamboo shrimp

I have a 30 gallon tank and I have one blue gourami three fat belly guppies a chinese algae eater one male guppy and thats it I most surely follow the one inch rule becasue like you I didnt and angelfish especially do not fair well. You will continue to lose fish if you keep overstocking your tank Thats it :)

my understanding was that with overstalking the stress kills but my angel was fine one day and dead the next.....kinda sudden u know. im asking this so i dont end up overtocking in the future once i have the tank.

sorry if i seem impatiant but i think its wierd that there are 62 views and no one has offered any suggestions

Sounds overstocked, right now in my 29 i just have 2 native fish, about 7 inches each....

Your 10 gallon sounds so overstocked...you need to follow the inch rule for them to live happily and healthy...

Heres what IMO you should add...

The bottom and top combo is about all you can add in there...if you add all the stuff you want on that list in there it simply is WAY overstocked.... sorry to dissapoint you

I think we can all agree that to keep a good tank the 1 inch to gallon ratio must be adhered to. Gouramis are top fish I have a nice blue gourami who is about 3 inches at present and he does well with guppies and I am getting a swordtail today since swordtail are bottom dwellers. Middle dwellers you seem to have alot of isnt it nice to see them all swimming in differnet area.

i know the tan gallon is overstalked, i will be getting a 29 gall to put most of those fish in to it.

ok i narrowed it down some:
bottom: 3 ottos
and 3 corries

middle: 5 harliguins(or maybe so other small shoaling fish)

top: 3 platies, 1 male sword, 1 female gold molly, and 5 guppies(probly gonna all be males)

other: 1 bamboo shrimp

is this narrowed down enough or do i need to leave out more.......btw i have most of these already in my ten gal except 2 corries, the sword, the 5 harliquins or what ever small shoaling fish i get(ie neon, glo lite etc) and the bamboo shrimp

can you all help me get it to the correct amount......also y do i need to "adhere" to the 1 inch ratio when the only large waste porducer is the ottos......and i forgot to mention ealier :*) that if the waste is an issue upgrading or adding an additional filter wont be a porb

The inch per gallon guideline is useful for giving you an idea of what you can and cannot keep. I don't follow it but you'd find that most of my tanks are either stocked according to it or understocked - not because I calculated the length of the fish etc but because that's what works best for me and my fish so that's what I ended up with.

Anyway, your current tanks are very over-stocked and I can see you are aware of this. Unless you are going to be giving away all those 'young' fish, I'd suggest you forget buying anything new and, instead, split what you currently have into the two tanks (the 10 and 29 respectively).

To use the inch per gallon guideline on your 10 gallon:

3 otos - 6"
1 cory - 2.5"
7 mollies - approx. 21" - you're going to need to re-home some of these - I'd rehome all of them except that adult and don't save any mroe fry in future if you don't have the necessary room for them.
9 guppies - approx. 15"
1 dwarf platy - 1"
2 platies - 3"

So you can clearly see how much more than you should you actualy have. The 20 gallon's ok.

What I would do is begin by moving all the platies and half the guppies in your 10 gallon to the 20 gallon. That would be ok for a while until you can re-home a few of the fry (whih I suggest you do as soon as possible though).

Then I'd move the molly fry and the remaining guppy fry to the new 29 gallon. Again, re-home as many as you can.

I'd leave the cory and otos in the 10 gallon temporarily though the cory should be moved to either of the larger tanks when possible, along with 3 more cories of its species as they should be kept in groups.

Don't think about getting ANY new fish until you've re-homed all those fry and sorted out the stocking. You'll have plenty of time in future to get another angel and those harlequins etc.

thanks for the help......funnily all the fry have been from me going to different lfs and seeing fry and they just give them to me for free. i was going to rehome the 6 mollie fry, probly all the female guppies along with any males i dont like. i will keep them for a while longer so that my fav lfs will take them becuase most of them are still a bit young

*BUMP* anyone else have ideas on what/how much i can put in to the 29 gal based on the list i would like to add.

This is what i would do if i was in your position

smaller babies in 10 gal just to stop them being eaten if you intend to grow them and sell them on

in the 20 gal 1 male and 2 female guppies, and either 1 male and 2 female platies OR 1 male and 2 female mollies

in the 29 gal 3 ottos, 3 corys,7 harlequins 3 mollies OR 3 platies

you could add 2 bamboo shrimp as they don't produce a lot of waste

1 male sword tail (give it a miss as it will cross breed with the platies)

1 angel (give it a miss as it will get too big and take up too much fish space)

Instead of upgrading to a 29 gal why not get a 55 gal or similar then you could keep the fish you want including the angel (this will eat your fry though) you could also get more corys, ottos and shrimp. If you did this you could keep your 10 gal for tiny fry and 20 gal for bigger fry before you sell them.
