Can You Guys Give Me Tips For My Bettas Mating?

Tip #1 is to save up a couple of hundred dollars to buy food and cultures and housing.

Tip #2...research,research,research :book:

its fun to breed fishes and esp those with interesting rituals and stuff, like the bubble nest, but theres a lot of responsibility in it and maybe even alot of money needed.....so think about that first.
Heres what I know: a male that is happy and ready will build a bubble nest. Live food is best prior to breeding-also makes them very active. I think it is important to use at least a 10 gal. tank with many decor and hiding places for the female to hide-if you have a vase or a jar or those stupid pet store small betta tank gimmicks dont breed them. Keep the water warm-75 to 80 F. Cover the top of the tank to keep the air humid and bubbles from popping. Water level not too deep-preferable no substrate/gravel so the male can see the eggs and babies. A female in sight may encourage him to build nest faster. You may introduce her in a cup first or if you feel ready let her in. They will display to each other-she will show vertical stripes. They may take awhile until the actually breed-may take up to a day? hence the large area and hiding places until the female is willing. Warning-females may take a lot of injuries and beating from this-that just seems like the way it is unless you get lucky-you will know when they mate-bodys curled together, eggs wil fall he will pick up and blow into nest-for minutes then it will be over.remove female and take good care of her. male will do his job-maybe keep lights on so he can see eggs. after a day or two eggs will hatch-leave male with nonswimming babies until they can swim horizontally then remove him.

Males may take a beating as well as the females can get excited and do some damage as well....... :D :p

Ohhh,ok thank you!I`m going to buy a heater soon today,but I think they`re in a 2.5 Gallon :( Is the 10 Gallon a MUST?

You need to read This Whole Thread. The advice is crucial. Hopefully you also understand that you will need a large growout tank, that breeding bettas can result in hundreds and hundreds of fry in one spawn, and that you will eventually have a room full of jars that you will have to clean, feed, and moniter daily.

The fact that you currently (according to your sig) have a male and female betta living together (a no-no) in a community tank that includes fish that are incompatable with bettas (another no-no) leads me to believe you need to do a lot more research before you consider breeding them.

I agree with caution. Do a LOT of reading. :)

Another great site for people considdering betta breeding is here: http://www.bettatalk.com/spawning_setup.htm -- It gives you a VERY real look at the costs involved (not even beginning to factor in the amount of TIME)

As for the question about the 10 gallon -- it isn't a must but I've always heard that 5 gallon is really the absolute minimum and 10 is better. Keep in mind, you could have hundreds of fry -- the smaller the tank, the faster that water is going to become fouled, and betta fry MUST have extremely clean water to live & develop properly.

Have you considdered what you're going to feed them or do you have food cultures on hand? That's something people sometimes overlook and you really need to plan ahead because you'll probably have to mail-order a microworm culture and set up a brine shrimp hatchery.

... just a few thoughts. :) Good luck.

I asked you in a seperate thread, but with no response I'll bring it up again...I noticed you have veils. What are you planning to do with the fry? VTs are mass produced and most fishstores have a contract with these breeders and are not allowed to take your fish. You won't be able to sell VT fry either because they are not desirable on the market. This leaves you with friends and family to get rid of anywhere from 50-600 fry -_-

Also your age, I'm assuming you live with your parents? Are they ok with you having a spawn tank (5-10 gals) a growout (30-55 gal) and 100+ jars?

Ohh sorry I was gone, well I`m not sure :( is it really possible to get like 100+ Bettas?

Well for a normal spawn its like 150+ so be careful. You're gonna have to cull the deformed ones, that's what im gonna do. I"m also gonna give away the other bettas when they're grown but keep the bests of the best. Start saving up jars!
