Can You Find Your Own Bogwood?

When I worked in a LFS (a long time ago) we had a guy turn up twice a year with a van load of huge bogwood pieces. They were far better than the piece that we would order from our suppliers, much bigger and more unique. The guy said he got it all from Prince Charles' Estate in the West Country (he had permission and wasn't stealing.)

So, my questions are;

Is it possible to find your own bogwood?

Where would you look?

How would you make sure is was safe?

it is but i think you have to leave it for like 6 months before you can use it.
