i was wondering if u can get plants from rivers or lakes even in swamp some are nice looking plants and i was jsut curious if anyone ever did that ... let me know pros and cons and what would they look like thanks :hyper:

anyone pls ... i m going to the cottage next week and spending a week there and was curious on that topic so any answers would be appreciated thanks

actually, thinking about that, i would be interested too... Where i go there is a river/creek and it has really nice grass plants which would look awesome in my tank...

bear in mind the possible addition of bacterium and other nastys that won't naturally be in your tank.
also it could be considered theft if you take stuff from a public place.
Here in the UK anything in a river or on a public river bank is most likely owned by the Environment agency

well i doubt it be own by anyone its a bay right at our cottage so ... not lilkely that they would get me and isnt there anyways to clean it off and keep it free like if i change water every day using well water or something and rinse it andkeep it submerged or somehting with its dirt from the lake or something ... any takeres esp the grass that would definately i mean isnt that where all the aquatic plants orginated from lakes and rivers huh

any takers as im in north america canada that is

Depends on which species you are talking, there's quite a few north American aquatic plants used in tropical planted tanks - so it is a possibility.
You would need identify which species and look it up in books or on the web to see if it's compatible with the particular water stats of your aquarium.

There's no 100% sure way to get rid of any nasties on the plants though, I'd just rinse thoroughly under tap water and leave in a basin of tap water for an hour or two (provided your tap water has chloramine or chlorine in it). This wont help that much tbh, but its still better than nothing.

I'll be able to let you know soon enough.. LOL

I have an empty 55 gallon tank, and while talking to a 'newbie' fish guy (Im trying to get the oscars out of his 55 gal... ) we starting talking about the 'pond' out back in the saw mill where we work. I know theres bull frogs, bass and bluegill, and also mudpuppys (If I can catch one, I will set up a bigger tank) but also all sorts of northwestern plants. so On a whim, I filled a 5 gallon bucket with 'stuff' I have a few unidentified plants.. lillypads, duckweed, and I am toying with a cat tail if I deciede I have enough stuff to rig lighting..

Haven't decieded if I will have fish yet, but I do seem to have snails, misc squigly things and leaches..

OK let me know then ill look when i get back from my vaacation and most likely post the plants and ill have it sit in water at the cottage all week so it will or should be rid of nasty as i will change water daily i guess ... hope it will survive .. curious about lily pad though can u actually keep those they bloom beautiful flowers.... i always pick them and put them in water .. and i dont need duck weeds i have that in my tank already and they do multiply quickly i have had it for a mth i went from 25 to 500 so they split and slpit and split over and over thats why gets really fast ....
will post after the 22 and u can identify or not
