Yoy can order both ways. On-line stores such as Trimar ( in the UK ) deliver fish to your door, most good LFS will order you a fish if avalable. Mine has 3 suppliers, they send him the list of fish they have in stock and he orders what he wants. He can also request fish not on their lists but they may not be able to get it.

Ive ordered a few fish from www.tropicalfish4u.co.uk.

Its very good service, however dont trust their descriptions DYOR before ordering

Trimar has more fish, but poor website

I've ordered fish from aquariumfish.net and all 14 fish arrived, safe and sound. Only one died overnight. Also, if one arrives dead, you can tell them and they'll give you another one. :)

Trimar does also have very good service though. Fish are sent up by their own courier, same day delivery, and very carefully packed.

I have also had fish sent through the post (next day delivery) from a breeder, worked fine. From the fish's point of view, it is no different from being sent to the lfs from the breeder.

I was discussing this with my mother this morning when I went to drop the kids off. She is a bit of an old bint and is a bit set in her ways. They are getting ready to cycle their latest tank and will be requiring a few fish to put in once it is done. By then my latest tank should be well cycled and settled down and I want to get specific breeds of fish and not just what the LFS happent to have in, I suggested we split delivery costs and order together and she came up with the excuse that it is unfair on the fish to be transported that way, I pointed out that the LFS gets his delivered, then she said she likes to look at them to see if they are healthy and in good condition.

Sometimes I feel like headbanging a brick wall.
