I have 5 zebra danios, and they all seem to stick to one side of the tank. Is it possible to water pushed out by my filter is pushing the fish to one side, or are filters generally not strong enough to do that? They can swim to the other end, but just seem to huddle in the top left hand corner, and when they swim to the right, it sorta looks like they struggle? will they just do this anyway?

how are your water stats cos if the fish are huddling together that usually means they are either unhappy with other residents in the tank or the water contains nitrites or ammonia
What size tank are they in ?

As fife said Danios love strong currents and a lot of the time swimming in strong currents , when i had mine they used to play for ages in the currents the stronger the happier they were

Test your water , let us know what the stats are and also post what size tank you have them in (length wise) and if they are in with any other fish

Good luck

Habitat/Care
Zebras are primarily surface dwelling fish that favor moving waters. Technically they are considered cold-water fish, preferring water in the 64-75 degree range. However, they will adapt to a wide range of water conditions.

They should be provided with plenty of lighting and an open swimming space, together with some vegetation.

Minimum Tank Size: 10 gallon

My stats are all fine. Small trace of nitrites due to just adding the fish. No trace of ammonia, and traces of nitrates. Temp is 26C, which is a little high, but should be ok. My Ph is also a little high at 8.1, but I've been told this is nothing to worry about, and really comes does to the area I live in.

There are no other fish in the tank, and it looks like my zebs are happy now. Didn't realize they liked the current, and like swimming in it now. They normally stay in a group of 3/4 with 1/2 breakaways at the other side of the tank. The tank size is 101cm long/3.3ft long.

TY guys :)

Hi, unless you have a pump out of a washing machine or the like then I doubt that your filter current is too strong for Danios in a 3+ footer. What filter are you running?

If they are new to the tank then their behaviour is quite normal unless there is a water quality issue. Give them time and I'm sure they will be all over the place in true Danio fashion :good:

All looks good now amongst the group. I'm running a Juwel 400 pump set.

thanks for the help all.

Hi guys. I don't have tropical fish - i have 3 tiny fancy goldfish which I have had for 3 days now, however I would appreciate some advice. The filter seems to create a strong current for them, which they seem terrified of. They stay at one side of the tank, sometimes trying to swim to the other side, sometimes successfully, only to "fly" back to the other side again. I have had to switch it off for now, as it wasn't nice to watch!! Once the filter is off they relax and carry on swimming round the tank and seem a lot happier.

The tank is 17 litres, and the filter is an Elite mini underwater filter.

Any advice appreciated!

You should really start your own thread rather than 'tagging' onto the end of this one.
Anyhoo, 3 fancy goldfish in just 17 Litres? You do realise that that is far to small for 3 fancy goldfish don't you?
