Hello!

I've just bought some plants for my goldies and maybe foolishly allowed myself to buy one that I hadn't researched before going to the LFS. I got a 0.25 ammonia reading so I'm wondering if it's the plants. I got 2 small elodeas, 1 java fern, 1 vallis and 1 of this:

Does anyone know what this is please? Hopefully aquatic and not edible by goldies

I've just logged off the computer (accessing from my phone now) so will try to fix the link tomorrow.

I don't get why I got the ammonia spike. My tank is fully cycled, it was cycled with 3 goldies, I only have 2 now so under stocked... so Im wondering if the plant is rotting away (it looks fine to me though).

you would need a lot of rotting plant to produce an ammonia spike.

Hm, probably not that then. All plants seem fine and I'm guessing I'd be able to spot them if they were rotting away? Probably a silly question but I've only ever had elodeas in the past.

Let's try the link for the unknown plant again:

It's the right in the middle, with darker bits on it. Does anyone know what this is? Is it aquatic?? Please let it be aquatic, please let it be aquatic! lol

looks like a echinodorus bleheri with some added diatoms.

How big is the tank?

Yes link not working and plants wont make ammonia
Yes, plants will cause ammonia if they start to rot

I meant to say it's a 160L but only filled with about 150L. I do this so I get some surface movement.

Thank you for that. What do you mean by 'added diatoms'? Biology isn't my forte and googling gave me lots of worrying results (i.e. algae!). I'll be very worried if it's algae as the plant came like that and I shall be returning it to the LFS...

Tbh, unless the photo is extremely sharp and clear, it's a bit difficult to tell whether a leaf has a natural brown colouration or a coating of diatoms (brown algae).

You can tell by rubbing it: if it comes off, it's diatoms, but chances are that if it came from the LFS like that, it will probably be natural colour.

Definitely aquatic, though - some kind of Amazon Sword, as has been said. :good:

Thank you for clarifying that. I'm not at home at the minute so I can't check but I'm pretty sure the colouration is natural. I'll double check when I get home though.

Thank you all!

(Back to the newbie board to find out why ammonia has gone up - if anyone has any ideas, please let me know)
