A few months ago I agreed to take in what was alleged to be a male convict but turned out to be some kind of juvenile African, probably Malawi when he arrived. He's striped like a convict (7 stripes) but body is shaped like a Malawi with 2 dark long front fins and has grown similar in size to a Jewel. As a youngster he had pale yellow tail and fins but these have now darkened to grey with yellow round the edges. He has 2 yellow egg spots on tail. In some light conditions his body can take on a bluish tint over the stripes BUT most unusual of all - he has a tiny bright blue fluorescent spot on each gill cover! Can't find photos or descriptions of any African cichlid like this. He is fairly aggressive and could hold his own as a youngster against much larger Jewels and cons twice his size. Now he#s older he chases them sometimes but no serious fights.

What species is he and will he grow much bigger? (currently between convict and Jewel in size)I'd love to keep him as I've grown fond of the little fellow but will have to make plans for rehoming if he's going to grow huge and turn into a killer.

Phone camera not good enough. Will try to borrow one at weekend.I thouhg tthose unusual fluorescent blue spots might be a clue?

No I have a number of fish that have blue spots on the sides of their heads. Sounds like it could be a bit of a heinz 57.
