Ok I bought a pair of convicts 2 weeks ago now I was certain that I picked a pair but now im not to sure. When I picked the one had a pink belly and was bought as a female and the othr had no pink belly bought as a male. Now the so called male has pink spots and spends all day chasing and beating up the other one. Also no spawning in 2 weeks which seems odd for cons. Here is a couple of pics do you think I have 2 females. If I do have a pair any ideas on what to do as the other one as you can see is getting the crap kicked out of it and hides all the time.

First the one I bought as a female.

This was bought as a male now thinking female

Looks male to me but I can't really tell from that pic... My male gets small orange spots on his belly when he's horny. Convicts may breed like rabbits, but you can't be sure you'll get a pair by buying one male and one female. Best to get a bunch of them and let a pair form.

I'm going through a similar process myself.. I've had a con for a few months which I've decided is most definitely male and have just bought him 3 females to pick from. 3 is still a small number for a pair to form from, but it was all the lfs had.

The first is a female, no dought. The second however, im not sure. Finnage says female, but colour says male. Why is it so blue? Colour sport?

Mark, they don't look like Convicts to me. They're most likely Honduran Red Points. First looks like a female. Don't know on the other one.

No doubt the first is a female. The second i want to say female too. Males tend not to have that much blue coloration in their finnage (at least in my experience) and you can see some orange going on on the belly. It could be a late developing female or a subdominant one.

Like I said, in my experiences I would say both female. I could be wrong. But that is my guess.

Of cource! The second one citranly is, hense the bright blue colour.
Still not sure about the first, did you buy them at the same time?

After I read what Radar posted, I thought the same thing. I was so lazy to not go back and add that lol. It didn't occur to me. I still say chances are both female, you'll only know for sure if they breed! :D

Do you think there both female Honduran Red Points or a Honduran Red Point and a convict I bought them both at the same time from wildwoods

See, what's throwing me off is the blue on the bottom. i've NEVER seen a convict with that much light blue sheen o nthe fins, nor all the way up under the mouth like that. If I had to guess, I would say both were Hondoran Red Points with them both being female. If they pair, then the one with less porange on the belly would be the male. Convicts and HRPs are very similar, and I've never owned HRPs, so I can't tell for sure. I jsut know that they don't really look like any convict I've seen, based off of the colorations. But I could be wrong...

Good luck, either way they are a couple really lovely specimens!!! Great coloration!!!
