i have a large community tank (500L) with various small fish, 5 large angels and two young angels.
i have just been offered a pair of rams. would these live happily by angels or is terrtory a problem maybe? not all 7 angels will be staying longterm, im just trying to get a pair from them then 5 will be going elsewhere

Hey spish, the rams should be fine with the angels no problems. The only problem will occur if your angels pair up and start to breed then the rams will be chased away if they go near the eggs/fry but otherwise I cant forsee any problems.

thank you my dear! just wasnt sure. i have a back up tank they can go in if fighting starts, suppose its a try it and see job!

Always is with cichlids, but Ive not heard of any problems with them mixing before. The rams are very peaceful really and angels usually only aggressive to each other or as I say when spawning.

With 500L to play with there should be plenty of room for both species

Angels are known to be fin-nippers and they don't have a very good reputation as a community fish since there are so many species that just can't be kept with them - so keep an eye on the rams because you could find they become a target.

Also, rams are peaceful most of the time but once they start spawning they display the usual cichlid aggression and will fight and chase any other fish in the vicinity to protect their eggs/fry. Hopefully, in a large tank, they will set up their territory at one end and the angels at the other. Try to create a natural divide in the tank with the use of plants/decor - out of sight out of mind, as they say.

Regards - Athena

ooh a divider wall made with plants a wonderful idea!
