I'm just wondering ... can platys be kept alone? I'm just wondering because I'm selling all of my platys back to the LFS as soon as they get big enough, and I've already sold back the parents. I'm tired of being overrun with fry, and I'd like to try some other types of community fishes.

Anyway, there's ONE of my babies that I've totally fallen in love with. It's some kind of mix between a red wag and a twinbar (I don't own any twinbars) -- she's yellow with black fins and a few orange spots. Anyway, she's my favorite, and I can't bear to part with her. Could I JUST keep her? Or should I keep some other females to keep her company. (My only concern about keeping 2+ females is that I heard platys can change genders and I don't want that to happen either!)

I have never heard of a platy changing gender - more likely a male that is slow to mature. Swordtails, on the other hand, can change gender but it is uncertain whether the resulting males are fertile or not. You could keep her alone though but if she is with males now, she may still give birth (using stored sperm).
