Can i use a bucket with no gravel from my ill platy (has fish dropsy).

There's no reason you can't use just about anything as a quarantine tank as long the bucket doesn't have any chemicals on it that are going to harm the fish. Soap tends to stick around even if you don't notice suds anymore. Rinse it well. You would still want a filter and a heater on the bucket though.

i have my fry in a styrofoam box that the fish come in at work. i know they are safe as this is what our wholesaler sends the fish so as much as it isnt conventional it works until i get my proper fry tank tomorrow (my bday)

yes would be perfect for a sump. its about 2' x 1.5'. holds about 60L
