Can i use normal cotton thread to tie down java moss?

When it rots, will the java moss be rooted to the rock?

Thanks

Mine tends to get filtered out or is removed when I run the siphon over the gravel.

LOL neal!!

I didnt mean what happens to the cotton. What happens to the moss? Does it float away, or does it root into the rock?

The moss will have had enough time to root itself by the time the cotton has gone, but this depends on what you attach it to. I've found that wood is best, moss can attatch to this very quickly. Smooth stones or rocks will take a little longer and the moss may disattach once the cotton has gone.

I've found that black polyester thread is very good to use as it does not rot and is easily hidden by the moss as it grows.
Another tip is to tie the moss the right way down, if you look closely you will see what appears to be little brown roots on one side of the moss. Put the moss brown root side down and this will help the moss attach to the rock/wood much quicker.

Thanks! How will it root too a smooth stone? Because it will have no where to hook?

Good questions. I've also just tried tying down Java moss. I found it attaches to rock in only a week or so.

I cut and remove thread as soon as possible. It's just one more thing that fish could possibly injure themselves on.

By the way, the word "smooth" is relative. A stone that feels smooth to us is VERY rough on a microscopic level.....lots of nooks and crannies for tiny root hairs to attach to. Root hairs can be only a few cells thick, if I remember correctly from science class.... a couple of years ago!

Moss is great stuff. You'd be surprised now 'rough' and uneven a stone is when you look at it magnified, no matter now smooth it feels.

Very true. Im just waiting for my delivery now!

It should look great when it establishes onto the rock as the rock is round.
