Can I test the nitrite test?

Just bought nitrite test kit (only previously testing ammonia on 6wk old tank with fish, so thought need to test nitrite as well).....test result came back at zero - obviously I am pleased but a little sceptical - is there any way I can test that the kit is working (I understand if they have been on the shelf a long time the accuracy can deteriorate)

Did you follow the instuctions on the test kit to the letter? I recently used a different one (API) and the tests came back zero till I noticed I had not followed the instructions by shaking the bottle

Yes, I was meticulous in following the instructions - I think I will get water tested at lfs and see what that yields before I decide to trust the kit !

I always get it tested at the shop before I buy a fish anyway- it's free and I can make sure my water is fine. I mean, if they told me my water was fine and it died a few hours after bringing it home, I could apply for a replacement as its their fault. WEll, not exactly but if it had a disase before I got it its nothing to do with me.
