:hyper: I saw some of these a few weeks ago, and didn't have a clue what they are. Borneos? What exactly ARE they? :S lol :*) And how big do they get? What do they eat? I suppose I could look all this up if I knew what they were called. :p

In other words, awesome pics Kelly, I want some. (I figure that's the highest compliment!)

Brilliant!! I have contemplated these but apparently they are coldwater only.

And yes, extremely cute especially the 2nd picture.

Thanks guys. I like them.

Technically I suppose they are cold water. That's what I've read and been told countless times. But mine live in the most unlikely tank...a tropical with big african cichlids. I know...it's wrong  (I don't keep a heater in my tank if that makes anybody feel better :p )
I suppose you'd have to see it to believe it. They're absolutely fearless and nobody messes with them at all. They have free roam over 120 gallons and they have special heavy filtration set up in the corners just for them. So I agree that they acclimate very easily.

They're also quite friendly! I have one who hand feeds, I posted a pic of him a few months ago. Pretty impressive for a wild caught fish.

Julie~ They're often called borneos, hillstream loaches and sometimes butterfly plecs ( ) which is what mine were sold to me as :)

They are actually neither cold nor warm, they are cool water fish from fast flowing, highly oxygenated streams.

Gastromyzon sp. are sold as both coldwater and tropical fish under a number of (wrong) names including

Hong Kong plec
Chinese Plec
Japanese Plec
Butterfly Plec
Hill stream Loach
Borneo Plec
Borneo Loach
Borneo Sucker
dwarf stingray pleco

They can adapt to warmer conditions, but it may shorten their lifespans.

Hello Wuvmybetta

Your little fish (if he's the one I think he is) is actually Beaufortia kweichowensis.

See pic here:

There isn't very much information about these fish out there but as far as I know, their basic needs include water with high oxygen levels.

I paid a lot of money for two of these little guys who both died, even though I have a tank full of Gastromyzon Punctulatus (similar speicies, same requirements), who are thriving.

Fingers crossed, eh? ;)

woohoo! I have water and heavy aeration covered  Sorry to hear about your losses. I've had mine for almost a year and they seem to be thriving. Thanks for the headsup on the actual species ;)

Nice! i tried to buy on of those once, but the guys at the lfs said he wasnt for sale :(

Hill stream Loach.. they luv power heads.. so much so that will swim into the outlet of a power filter

http://www.loaches.com/species_pages/beauf...ichowensis.html

they come from very very fast flowing waters and for some reason I never heard or seen a aqaurium hillstream loach grow ANYTHING.. if anyone had theres grow bigger that when they were when you got them let me know..

I have seen big ones 7-10cm, 3-4 inch but never had a small one grow at all..
