My heater for my new tank won't be here till mid week. Can I fill my tank and start cycling without a heater and then pop it in when it comes?

Yes you can, the rate of bacterial reproduction will be slower while the water is cooler however.

+1 wont do nay harm at all but i doubt the cycle will even kick off at room temp amy in great volume, you will have your heater by then anyway :0)

yeah how do think us on the chilly side keep our water safe for fish hehe

it is correct the bacteria (nitrosamonas and nitrobacter)do favour the warmer temperatures.
but it is still fine to cycle without a heater indeed.

it takes roughly 2 to 3 weeks longer than heated water though.
so you will have your heater by then anyway, get that cycle started early and you wont be waiting as long :good:
