I currently have a 120L tank with two blackmoor goldies. Now, a friend of mine is looking to offload a single ryukin because he's moving house and wont have the space to really keep a tank. I know it would be a squeeze but what's peoples thoughts on this?

You could, as a short term measure, but 120l is really only large enough for two goldies; you'd need to look at upgrading to something a bit bigger if you want to keep all three; 160/180l as a mimimum.

What are the dimensions and filtration? How often do you do maintenance?

Dimensions are approx (from memory) 80cm x 35cm x 45cm

Filtration is two fluval u3 internals.

Maintenance is weekly with 30-40% water change and filter clean outs.

Yes, that tank is definitely not big enough for the long term as fancy goldfish can grow to over 20 cm long without too much difficulty. I would also consider the filter on the not-quite-good-enough-at-picking-up-crap side of things for goldfish, an external would normally do a much better job. For the short term, the tank probably can take the three fish.

For the long term, I recommend you try to upgrade to a 120 cm tank, for example a 220-240 litre job. That would also allow you to keep more goldfish, while giving the existing ones more swimming space, and also the potential to add other species, such as weather loaches.

Thats a no go then.

I cant really fit a larger tank in to the space I have available. I figured 120L would be ok for two fish (using the 50L per fish rule of thumb). But I do already have plans to move to an external filter as I'm fed up with a fine layer of dirt on everything in the tank after a week or so between cleaning. I've eliminated virtually everything I can think of that may be adding to it and whilst its reduced it, it hasnt eliminated it.

I do have plans next year to move to a 200L or 400L depending on what I can convince the girlfriend to let me have but for now, I'll have to pass.
