Hi there guys i was just wondering can i speed up the cycling in my tank. I have a new 65 litre Freshwater tank, and my old tank is a 20 litre Freshwater one. I was wondering if i put half the water out of my old tank in to the new one will this help speed it up!!

The water won't help, but what you can do, is move some of your old filter media (maybe 1/3) to the new filter (this is called seeding) or clean your old filter in the new fish tank.

If you are planning an upgrade (so you will not be using the old tank once the new one is ready), you can move all fish, water and old filter to the new tank now (all of these must be moved at the same time).

Water wont do much you need filter media that has been in a mature tank. Also using products like Bacterlife, API stress zyme. will help bacteria colonize on filter media.

I respectfully disagree with the addition of bacterial additives doing anything to speed up a cycle.

The best plan is mature media, pure and simple. The next best plan is a bottle of ammonia, a test kit and a lot of patience.

Mature media is the trick, leave the bottled junk at the shop & the money in your wallet.

ok thanks thanks for the your help. It is an upgrade but my old filter is a built in one will it sill work if i just put all the water and fish in without the old fliter?

Increasing the temperature to 30-32oC will increase the rate at which bacteria reproduce, other than that, follow the advice of others and use mature media.

i agree with eagle, when i got my new tank, i used part of my old filter media to seed the new filter, it worked and the cycle was much shorter. Good luck

It will NOT work without the old filter.

Can you move all the media (sponges and everything) from the old filter into the new filter?

upload a pic of te old filter for us, can you get at the filter media in there, if so you can take some out, stick it in the new one and fill that up with water. Do not put the fish in yet as the rising nitrite, ammonia and nitrate levels will cause disease extreme stress and eventually death. Which would be tragic.

So be kind to the fish and cycle it first :)

oh and :hi:

It will NOT work without the old filter.

Can you move all the media (sponges and everything) from the old filter into the new filter?

but surely you will need some left in the old tank while the new one cycles?

No, because the new one will be cycled enough for the current fish, the moment *all* media is transferred. So, if you transfer all media, it is moderately safe to transfer all fish at the same time. Readings need to be watched, of course.

ok thanks for all your tips i will put part of my old filter media in to the new filter and then just let it cycle. How long do you think it will take?

If you move all filter media, it is instantly capable of supporting your current fish.

If you move some of the media, usually 2-4 weeks.
