Can I sink food on string?

Hi all. I have no fishing line handy and was wondering if its OK to sink some food on the end of string. Just worried there might be something in the string that would make fish sick

standard white cotton thread is fine to use.

Monofilament fishline is made from nylon resin and is aquarium safe...however, it will not sink without some weight attached. I'm thinking you might better want sinking pellets or wafers.
