i was given 2 gouramis in a bucket by a neighbour (dont ask why i dont know) i have two cold water tanks and a bigger comunity tank with 3 danios, 1 xray tetra, a loach and a plec.. i have no idea what type of gouramis they are as i cant tell in the bucket and ive never had them before... we are trying to set up our spare tank with heater but im not sure the heater works... can i put them in my larger tank as im getting worried aobut them being in the bucket for too long... they seem fine and are eating and active

Hi

Can you describe the gouramis for us? E.g. how large are they, what colours they are, etc? A lot of gouramis are different in temperament and requirements depending on which kind they are. If we know what ones you have we'll be able to offer some more useful advice. Alternatively, take a picture for us if you can, or again, have a look through the species profiles for gouramis Here - Labyrinth Fish (Gouramis are here) on this site to see if you can identify them, or even do a google image search on gourami, I'm sure it won't take long to find one that looks like yours.

You'll want to get them out of the bucket as soon as you can, I find this stresses my fish - I think they don't like being surrounded on all sides and not being able to see out. Also, I don't know where you live, if its cold they need to get in heated water.

I don't know much about x-ray tetras, and the fact you have one might be a worry (tetras are schooling fish, they do better in large groups) as solitary fish without others of their own kind can get bored and start bothering other fish. Gouramis have long feelers and/or fins that might be targeted by nippers and that can stress them, or even if they're being bothered a lot lead to infections and disease. But then again, you might have no problems, depends on the individual fishes temperament sometimes.

Also, how big is your tank? Depending on the species and m/f ratio, certain amounts of space for territories are required by gouramis so they don't fight with either each other or other fish.

If I were you, I would put them in your community. There's no obvious clash of species there, you might only have nipping problems. Put them in, observe, and IF there's trouble, then definitely take them out and try to put them in your other tank. I really don't think you'll have any major dramas though. They'll be much better off in the tank than a bucket!

Again, if you can provide more info we'll be able to help you more. Let us know how it goes. Good luck!

Thanx for the advice i put them both in the community tank last night and they are doing well.. i did a quick reshuffle of the plants and they now have a heavily planted corner of their own... im pretty sure they are gold gouramis but will try and get a pic to check
