I've got a couple of freshwater tanks and bought a shell in a store while on a trip. Tag on the shell was from the phillipines. Can I put this in my tank or will it kill my fish. I soaked it and it didn't seem to release anything.

I would have thought it was safe to put in. Shells would occur in the wild.
If in any boubt as to whether a naturaly occuring object, i.e. non-man-made, is safe for aquarian use, first soak in water, as you have done, then do a vinigar drop test.
To run a vinigar drop test, you simply drop a bit of vinigar on to the object to be tested. If the drop rolls off or sits on the surface, the object is safe. Remember to wash before use. If the drop fizzes, it is unsafe to use in an aquarian.
Remember to sterilise the object prior to use, to ensure no diseases are introduced to the tank, on the object.

hope this helps
