Hey can I take a twig from outside and stick it in my tank and grow java moss on it to make it look like a tree? If so would I be ok with washing it real well without soap then boiling it and doing that a few times to clean it?

Thanks

Austin

I wouldnt risk it. You may introduce nastys into the tank.

I think you would find it difficult to be honest.

AND riccia may give you a better effect than java moss should you try.

I don't see why not, automated teller machine machine (if you see what i mean ;) ) .
Better still if you can find a piece of suitable wood that's already been submerged for a bit.... As long as it's boiled and maybe give it a good scrubbing with a tough brush, it should be fine.
Leave it sit in a strongish salt solution for a while and any bugs should be ex-bugs.
It could look really good if the moss takes off......
Let us know how you get on....

ATM are my intials (pretty cool huh) and ya I know what you mean, I'v known that for a long time now. As soon as I can get some java moss from riverman I'll try it but I found out it's illegal to sell java moss in petstores here in Ohio in the US along with 25 or so other states because it can survive over winter in the sewer systems and cause problems. It's illegal to get it off the interenet though, so until I can get some from riverman I can't get any :( (it's like pirhanas are illegal in florida and other states.

That looks cool, I don't know if christmas moss is banned, I'd think so though since it's pratically the same thing, just different look. Some fish stores by me have it in display tanks, though if they sold it and the right people found out they'd get in BIG trouble I guess. Ask somebody who works at a fish store by you if it's illegal, the guy I was talking to said it's illegal in about half the US.

There are a lot of banned aquatic plants in the US, but I will say, I see most of them in tanks in stores. Hygrophila Polysperma is one of them. Most store owners just say don't tell anybody and go ahead and sell it to you.

You can buy Java Moss on ebay without any problems, the sellers don't turn you in to anybody etc. I have mail ordered lots of plants. If you have extra clippings, just don't flush them down the toilet, just toss them into the trash, they won't survive.

Not in the US but that seems like great advice :) you dont want to be the reason all your local rivers get clogged with the stuff now do you? All for the sake of having a plant in your tank ;)

I don't know what person would think of flushing a plant down the toilet though, just throw it away like you would with a plant outside. Makes sense. I guess if they were  or they just think different then me they would.

I've been looking for hygro for months and haven't seen a bit of it. No wonder! I didn't know it was illegal.

I find it difficult to keep myself from flushing plants down the toilet, especially java moss, because little bits get syphoned up when I do a water change. I have to stick my hand down into the bucket and get each little piece of moss out before dumping it down the toilet. I have too many tanks and too many water changes to find a use for all the water, especially in the winter when I don't have outdoor plants to water. I try to be careful about flushing the java moss because I live a couple blocks from a major river. And no, I don't (usually) drink before doing a water change!

Ya see you and I think differently and do stuff differently so I guess some people do flush it downt the toilet.
