i was thinking about leaving my 2.5g tank here over the christmas break. ill be leaving for home tomorrow evening? or maybe friday and i wont be back until Jan 4th. i know im going to bring home the algae eater to put in my brother's tank, but i was wondering if the white cloud minnows could be left here with the ghost shrimp. i could throw in an algae wafer that they could munch on. the guppies i have would probably need to go home with me too huh? my female just gave birth a lil while ago, but most of the fry are already eaten so im not expecting any survivors. what do you guys think? should i just pack up everything and bring it all home?

I would suggest that you pack up everything and bring it home. 2.5 gallon isn't a big tank so it shouldn't be too difficult.

You cna buy an electric feeder from a store. They feed the fish every day for you. Then they would be fine as long as you do a good water change before you leave.

I left my danios and white clouds for one week, thinking it would be fine after reading about it. I came back and the danios gills looked red and the white clouds had lost so much colour..I fed them as soon as I got in and they looked fine the next morning and still do. So I won't leave them for any lenght of time again. I might have lost them had I left it any longer.

I'm going to look into the electronic feeders ready for my next holiday.

its a 2 hr ride though, and if i pack everything ill have to re-establish the tank, and i didnt want to buy one of those automatic feeders just to use once

You said your brother has a tank so you could use his tank to re-start your biological filtration and have an almost instant cycle.

2.5 gallons is too small and a rather unstable environment to leave fish ufed in for 2 weeks. I wouldn't trust an automatic feeder in such a small tank. It may completely destroy your water quality. I think you'd be best off taking them with you. Your 2.5 also sounds over-stocked so leaving it without any water changes for the two weeks might prove very detrimental to your fish and water quality.

My friend has a 55g and all his fish died off (hes had it since he wa slike 5), he doesnt water change and has 1 Rainbow shark in it, the tank is acauuly growing plants and algea in it so he doesnt even feed the shark it just lives..Im not sure wat the point of this story is but its nuts

 thats a sad story about teh 55... not only a waste of a tank... but it could have so much potential

hmm i wonder if u slowly got the fish used to not eating like little bit less each day, they could get used to it...

okay, i've pretty much decided that i'm going to take all the fish home with me. but im going to leave the tank here with the ghost shrimp so i wont have to empty everything out and recycle when i get back here. at home the fish will temporarily (and some permanently) be housed in my brother's tank. what do you guys think?

that's so sad, you should ask him if you could have the tank since he's not really using it.

I'm not sure if ghost shrimp alone will keep the bacteria from dieing. Obviously some will still be present, but my guess is that the ghost shrimp don't produce that much waste. I wouldn't worry tons, but you might want to do water changes a little more frequently and test water conditions a little more often as the biological filter might need to "catch back up"

yah ive tried to get it but he likes the shark. I dont understand how its alive! hes not really into fish tho i just dirtbike with him.

The one thing that would worry me if I left my tank unattended for a long period, would be one weak fish dying and contaminating the whole tank. I guess this is probably the cause of multiple deaths in unattended fishtanks :dunno:

Personally I wouldn't risk it either
