Since Mbunas usually pick off alergy from rocks. Is there a specific type of alergy I could grow in my tank for them to help keep them occupid while im away and not feeding them?

I have 2 plants in the tank right now. I just recently read this from the planted section. Is it still at all possible? I see very litte algae on the plants them selfs and non on rocks or glass.

In a planted tank there is a constant battle between lower plants (algae) and higher plants (normal plants we want to grow).

Basically if plants grow well then algae doesnt, and vice versa. Algaes worst nightmare is a tank full of healthy, growing plants the better the growth the less likely algae has a chance. This is why fast-growing plants (generally stem and floating) are ideal algae-busters.

The reasons for this are fairly complex but put simply plants produce alleochemicals when growing. These chemicals act like a form of chemical warfare known as alleopathy it is a principle found throughout nature in plant forms and includes even marine corals. It is this alleopathy that fights off algae.

In all honesty you do not want algae growing in your tank... It is a pain in the butt to clean off and spreads like a wild fire, cichlids (at least mine) do not do a great job of cleaning, they pick at it, but don't clean it off!

"al(l)ergy" is the name given to a condition that your body reacts badly to ( eg nut allergy) - algae on the other hand is the stuff that grows in a tank.

if you have algae growing on the rocks in your cichlid tank it can actually look pretty good, but as soon as it starts growing on the glass it looks bad again. All yu need to do is clean it off the glass, but let it grow on the rocks...if you want it that is.

cheers, greg :good:

You will get algae in time or after the cichlids dig up your plants and dont worry about feeding them if your away dont forget a holding female will go 3 weeks without feeding.

oh and the stuff they eat in the wild is aufchuff (spelling probably wrong)which grows on the rocks

Aufwuchs. It's a mix of algae and the tiny animals like rotifers and crustaceans that live among the algae.

Mind you, I think "aufchuff" is a very cool word. Trying to think of something to use it for!

Cheers,

Neale
