I have a 180 litre tank and would like to get some more small active fish, would this be ok?

I was thinking of rummynose tetras and other fish of a similar size that would mix with the fish I already have.

My current stocking is
3 albino cories
3 bronze cories
4 peppered cories
1 platy
6 leopard danios
10 neon tetras
5 harlequins
3 glowlights

I will be getting a couple more glowlights so they are in a larger group but the shop only had 3 left.

I would appreciate any comment or ideas.

i think whichever you get will be lovely

Thanks,

I like the small fish best, its the way they are always so active and there is always something happening in the tank to watch.
I just worry about over stocking.

you should keep platys in groups, so you could add a few of them, same gender though unless you want fry, also, rummynose tetras sound fine, but wait for someone else as well. :D

I did think of getting the platy some friends, he used to have a couple of male friends but they died.
The problem is I don't want females because of the babies and was worried if I got more males they might gang up on him as they arrived together.

He does seem happy, he swims in the filter and plays with any fish that are there with him.

Thanks for your comment.

ya, tbh I am no expert so I just repeat what I hear, but I think that male livebearers are like cichlids, you can spread the aggresion, if he seems happy though, there is no reason to leave him d:D

Thanks for your comments,
I think I will leave him on his own for now while he seems happy, if this changes I can always follow your advice and add some more platys then. :)

My glowlights swim with the neons, so I was wondering if there was another type of fish I could get that would join in with a group of fish I already have?

Dani,

I'm no expert but if your tank is 180 litres, that is 39.5 UKg or 47.5 USg. If you work on the 1" of adult fish per USg rule, then you haven't really got room for any more fish - in fact you may have too many already. Or did you mean 180g?

My tank is 180 litres, but I checked on here before and was told I had room for more fish. Most of the fish are small and I clean the tank and change some water every week, I am also half way through changing my plastic plants for live ones and my water stats are fine.

I only wanted to add some small fish that would swim with the others because the tank looks quite empty.

If anybody else thinks I am overstocked please let me know?

Hi,

I work out the surface area of the tank then divide by 10 or 12 depending on the sort of fish I want to keep. (whether they make a large mess, how big they get, that sort of thing).

As for small fish, I have just bought some Ember Tetras. They grow to about 0.8inches long and are a lovely deep gold. They swim perfectly with my silver tipped tetras and my Dwarf Neon Rainbows don't seem to be bothered by them at all.

They can be hard to find though so you may have to search a bit. In fact I got the info on them from a thread posted on here. It gives a great selection of small tetras.

I just tried your method and it works out if I divide by 12 I can have 55 inch of fish, or if I divide by 10 as most of my fish are small I get 66 inch of fish.

If I aim around these numbers should I be allright?

I wasn't going to go mad with the number of fish I bought I would just like it to look a bit more active at times.

Thanks Rebecca for your fish suggestions I will keep a look out for them.

If the sums work out that's fine. Just wouldn't want you to have to buy another tank when the fishes get bigger
I use the surface area calculation too: 1" per 12 sq.in. - and I use the current size of the fish - but then I'm just waiting to have an excuse to get a bigger tank :D

The next fish on my want list are black neon tetras. I think they'd be a really good contrast to the others.

Dont forget its just a guide and not a rule with things like 1 inch of fish per gallon.. (meaning it might be more or less)

Common sense prevails.. look at how much room the fish have and whether any new fish will be swimming in the same space, or they fill a different strata. Take your filtration into consideration too...

Thanks for all your advice,

I think I can get a few more little fish, I will just have to remember don't go mad. :D
