Hi, i am soon to be getting a 110-125l tank. Ita going to become a high tech planted but, along with some cories, cardinal tetras and 2 Rams, could i keep 2 discus? I am going to get an external filter.
My stocking would be:
4 cories
6 cardinal tetras
2 rams
2 discus

There would be plenty of decor and plants lol so the discus would feel at home. If there are any other stocking options you think owuld be good then fire away.
I would prefer amazon fish though.

Thanks
Will

Tis a little small i am afraid, they really need a tank at least 50 gallons, 200 odd litres.

4ftx1x1 ish.

I have just had to get a 400 litre as i was given 3 discus from a mate whos moving and my 200 is no longer big enough.

Sorry but I really really wouldn't.

Discus can only be kept in pairs if you buy a proven breeding pair. This will be expensive and your not going to breed them a waste IMO.

You'd need a group of 5 otherwise and a bigger tank.

Also, high tech planted tanks and newbie Discus keepers don't mix. Master each seperately than try combining them...

Not to mention the need for soft water and the commitement they require also (not saying you wouldn't be able to do it, just taking on a discus planted tank is a lot of work!)

A 4x1x1 is not suitable for adult Discus. The height should be at least 18", more depth the better also.

Sorry, just noticed the typo. Anything above 15 inches tall is fine. The general rule of thumb is 10 gallons of water per discus at full growth so that gives you a general guidline at how large a tank you are looking for. Discus respond better to a slightly acidic ph and softer water, water softness does vary according to which keepers you speak to, anything from 3 to about 12 is fine.

I would actually go for apistos but thats just me, i have a soft spot for them and suit the amazon region perfectly.

I would go for german rams

Well you get some weak fish at the best of times anyway. Still they need a nice mature tank as they are very susceptable to getting poisoned from slightest levels of ammonia/nitrite.

Still if the tank has been running well and cycled for over a month with a lowish bioload then there should be no problems. Just add the fish slowly and let the filter adjust for a week before you add other fish, that sort of thing. Rams are usually not too bad. Trust me, if Pets at Home can keep them alive i am sure you will be fine.

i'd have to agree with Chris is a Dude. Thats a little small, and discus liek larger groups tahn just two, unless they are a breeding pair. I agree with the apistos. Any dwarf cichlids would be nice, provided its timid enough not to attack the tetras. i personally would try to find some exotic tetras for a tank that size and create a school, maybe like Poecilocharax weitzmani, also called the Black Darter Tetra.

i have bot decided because i like them all. I havent asked if i can have discus already, i just wnated to know the requirements for discus to tell my friedns because he is setting up a discus tank. I only asked because when i wanted to know their requirements, a person said you can have 2 in a 100l tank and i didnt think this was correct so i was double checking.
