as in the title can i float certain plants on the surface so they will be near to the light to help them grow. i had in mind java fern. if it will float? will they still be able to take nutrients in if i float them? im my fry tank my light is stronger and puts out around 1.6 watts per gallon whereas my main tank only puts out 1 wpg. can i float them in my fry tank as i don not have any substrate? tanks.

you can float the (although java fen can be weighted down by the rhizome) the leaves may grow all twisted as if the current keeps turning them over, the leaves carry on growing to the light.

how about a floating plant like amazon frogit, this has long roots that trail

i havent got any of that. i dont want to use it as a floating plant, just to enhance its growth. it may only be for a day or 2. if it does sink, am i right in saying they still grow in a substrate-less tank?
