Hi! :) I was wondering if I could fit in 3 more swordtails in my 20 gallon tank.

Here are the tpyes of fish I have. Most are the sizes are 1 inch.

2 albino and 1 normal Buenos Aires Tetra,
4 Black Skirt Tetras,
5 Glo-Light Tetras,
4 Peppered & 1 Bronze Corydoras, &
3 Kuhli Loaches.

And what's the recommended size aquarium for keeping Swordtail fry to the size you can sell it for?

The minimum gallons for swordtails is 15gals, you could have 1male and 2-3females in your tank max(its advised you don't have more than one male as they fight, and you need at least 2females), the recommend minimum gallons for a swordtail fry tank is 10gals although it can be done with 5gal, the fry will not be able to stay long in there at all and only have a couple- most lfs's will not take in livebearer fry(i.e swordtails) at less than half grown and the vast majority of lfs's will not pay anything for livebearer offspring since they can be bought for pennys from breeders and have insurance on them :) .

Good luck with your swordtail breeding, make sure your lfs will take fry off you at all before you breed fish as not all lfs's do, you will also need a filter(easiest way to cycle the filter without harming the fry is to run it along side your current one for a week before you put the fry and it in your fry tank) & heater for your fry tank- you might want to check out the pinned articles or threads in the livebearer section for tips on raising fry or breeding swordtails in general too  .

Hi Adam,

I'm in Surrey too.

Keeping, and breeding by default, platies and swordtails.

Petsmart is cheap and good for supplies.

Have you checked out Big Al's for fish?
They farm their own fish in Florida. Stores in Burnaby and Richmond.

The staff are very knowlegable. Very rare to see sick/dead fish.
Each tank is separate.
You get the quantity and cheap price of a franchise, but the health and knowledge of an independent store.
WAY better than any chain store.

Thanks. I'm wondering if you can sell fish ther for money or do you just get store credits? Or none? I'm thinking of breeding swordtails.

I have been down this road.

And here in my Part of the U.S.A, I trade for Credits at the Store.

Or if i bring in enough at anyone time You can trade them for Food or Chems. Sometimes I even trade for other Fish.

Hmmmmm, Bring Fish in, Carry Fish out: My Wife says thats Strange? But what does She know she married Me.

Anyway go to your LPS and arrange with them before hand what will be done, Don't wait until you have a bunch of Fry to get rid of and have No Place to take them too.

Or you might end Up with more tanks then you bargined for.

But then again you can NEVER have to many Fish or Tanks for that Matter. :/

I ment Surrey or Langley or somewhere near like Richmond or Burnaby. I was asking Heather. But uhh :/ ...
Thanks anyway. I'll wait till I can see if it's worth breeding and selling swordtails. I'll think i'll try it in my one gallon tank and then move to my divided 20 gallon. Gonna get rid of the Black Skirts. There (aren't that exiting really) so I can free up room. :fish:
