Can I Do This?

Wrong! The betta's are territorial and will chase the platys and swortails around eventually killing them

Have you had this happen in your personal experience?

I have kept bettas very successfully with platies (although not swordtails). They aren't as fast moving or nippy as some tetras so can get along very well.

Cant say ive ever seen a truly territorial Betta, but agree with Louise, they will go for stuff that move quicker than they do, fast moving fish freak them out a bit sometimes. (Tetra's etc)

Betta will chase and kill anything that looks like its own kind... So stuff with long fins like a male guppy. I never have problems with betta and platys, however the sword tail is a maybe!

I would just be concerned that swordtails are pretty fast and crazy swimmers, plus get comparatively big. Big tank, current and fast moving fish aren't exactly ideal betta conditions.

EDIT: oh and 14 gallons is far too small for them anyway.

I thought they only went for long tail fish, not Platys...although i guess the swordfish might come into that category
