My Tank

Hi
My dad was going to sell our 5ft tank which is lovely, but said I can keep it if I find a cheap way to keep it stocked, any ideas on what you can breed in a 5ft

Amanda from the New Forest UK

If you want to get fish to breed quickly, I would suggest Livebearers like Platies, Swordtails, Endlers or Mollies etc. The will breed like rabbits... I have one male platy and 2 femails and I have had them for 4 months and have 30+ offspring already... Plus I have seen some more smaller babies... But make sure you have somewhere for the fry to hide... my 2p worth...

If you ever go to central london there is on fish shop I  love(Aquatic Design Centre, 109 Great Portland St, London W1W 6QG, 020 7636 6388) They have hundreds of livebearers and also other fish, don't forget to go downstairs and see all their setups, they have about 20+ tanks of various setups marine to amazonian etc. really nice)

As already mentioned, platies, guppies, mollies and swordtails are up there with the rabbits. In a 5-foot, swordtails would add a lot of action and look good.

If you want something for the bottom, bristlenoses are also easy to breed, and those you can probably sell. Since they protect their eggs until after they are free-swimming, they don't need to be moved to a separate breeding tank, as long as you have caves for the parents to spawn in. My bristle male is currently fanning his fourth batch of eggs since this summer. I'm going to have to sell off at least all the males as they grow up- but that will finance further fish purchases.
