Can Guppys Go In A Cold Water Tank?

I've just been presented (by my Mum) with two guppies, given that my 10lt tank is now "overstocked" with a bumble bee goby, can I put them in a cold water tank instead?

Hi,

Coldwater wouldn't be suitable for them as they need warmer water/filtration - they wouldn't go with your goby either, as that's in brackish (salt) water. Probably best to take them straight back if you haven't got a suitable environment for them.

:good:

Im not sure about a 10l being overstocked with a single goby. Im not sure how big they get, but i do know they like to be in groups. As for the brackish status i've seen that challenged and been told that they do fine in freshwater.
And no, no guppies in cold water.

Thanks very much, I'll put them in with the Govy for the time being and see how they go.

Weeeeell you'll probably be overstocked if you add the guppies to the goby tank :/
I'm sure it'll be alright temporarily if you keep on top of water changes.

to be fair two guppies arnt going to make that much difference to the bioload :/ what are the sexes m/m m/f f/f

nice thought by your mum, but if you can tactfully explain about surprise gifts of animals not being a good ieas it will stop her buying you more in the future. Perhaps mention that lfs vouchers would always be welcome . That way you can choose your own fish when you are prepared for them. :D

They're both male. I'm doing 25% water changes every other day and the nitrite level is at 0.

Very, very, very excellent advice. IMHO, pets of any type should never be given as gifts. All too often they end up dead as a result of neglect or lack of pet keeping experience, or in the pound as unwanted. There are of course some exceptions to the rule, but as a rule, it should never be done. Flame away, but you'll not change my way of thinking...never.

Also, the Bumble Goby is a brackish fish. It should be kept in brackish water, not freshwater. That will kill your Guppies though. These two fish should not be tankmates.

i may be wrong but i thought bumble bee gobies were small, about 0.6 inch?ive also heard they do well in freshwater, i would have thought they would be fine together in a 10 gallon if you keep up with water changes etc...guppies are definatly NOT coldwater. good advice from fenwoman, not to be meam to your mum or owt, but buying a live animal when not fully prepeared isnt a good idea.

10L not 10gal lol

Nither guppies or bumblebee gobies are coldwater but both could be housed together in a slightly brackish tank(the goby will need this anyway).

The Goby and the Guppies are getting along fine and everyone looks happy, I'm still doing the regular water changes and the Nitrite level is still 0, so I guess I must be doing something right. I have added a small amount of aquarium salt for the Goby.

Yes, the Goby's are small, max size 4cm.

Fish may adapt to wrong water conditions, but that usually cuts down their life span considerably. I know there is nothing I can do to convince you that your fish look happy, but Bumble Gobies are naturally brackish water dwellers. There are two types of Bumblebee Gobies, one of which does much better in tolerating freshwater, but the key word is tolerate. Your fish should be thriving. With that said, I will leave that issue alone. Good luck with those fish.

If you are having high readings on either ammonia or nitrite, that spells trouble for your fish. If you have high ammonia and low nitrites, you have two basic possibilities. First, your ammonia reading may be off. What kind of test kit are you using? Test strips are highly inaccurate. If it is accurate, you may just not have developed the bacteria to convert ammonia to nitrite. Keep up on the water changes. As long as you are overstocked, it's the best way to keep things clean for your fish.
