Why are you laughing at them like that? They just wanted to know if bettas could breed with other types of fish (like guppies for instance). :grr:

Betta splendens (our typical Betta) can hybridize with Betta imbellis and Betta smaragdina, and probably other types within the Betta genus.

They cannot breed outside the Betta genus.

http://ibc-smp.org/ You can find info on them in there.

I don't know if they can breed with B. bellica, but I know they can breed with B. imbellis and B. smaragdina.

I agree with Kiarra. The betta genus can breed with it other like Imbellis with Bellica and so on.
Weeell, I wouldn't say hybridization within the genus is quite that rampant and easy
Generally bettas can interbreed within their species group (splendens, bellica, coccina, picta, pugnax, waseri, akarensis, foerschi, albimarginata, and patoti) but bettas from two different groups are too genetically dissimilar to produce offspring. Mouthbrooders and bubblenesters don't mix, either, for obvious reasons :p
According to some opinions I've heard on this forum, splendens can only hybridize with smaragdina, imbellis, and mahachai.

I KNEW I'd forgotten Mahachai. I knew there was a third in there...I just forgot the name.

history nerd, cept it's been going away over the summer, over playing all of those video games.

Does trivia count for nerdship? I swear I know entirely too many useless facts... *sigh*

So, could hybrids of imbellis, smaragdina and mahachai breed with some of the other members of the betta genus?
