Hello everyone,

I have two identical fresh water tanks with a self sustaining supply of mollies in them. In one tank a type of algea is starting to grow and I can't seem figure out which kind it is. Can anyone identify which kind it is so I can get started figuring out how to get rid of it? In both tanks I have some floating hornwort. All the levels seem normal. I just added some water before I took the picture so the free floating material isn't normally there. I even bought an algea eater just in case this would help, but it hasn't.

Thanks for any help.

Black brush algae? The pictures are kind of fuzzy to see the texture. Does it rub off easily? Is it like this picture?

The mollies try to pick at it, like they do to everything, but it doesn't seem to come off. I will try to brush it off tomorrow. It doesn't look like the picture you linked to, that algea looked a lot more full and somewhat "organized". The algea I have just seems to be a covering on everything now.

Try the second link, I just added through edit.

Yes the second link looks a lot like what I have. Since I don't have a planted tank, so to speak, is there any way to increase the CO2 without injection? I've never had this problem before.

Thanks for you help Sammie7

Flourish Excel is a type of liquid carbon, often used in the place of CO2 injection. Some have success actually using this stuff as a sort of spot treatment for algae. Overdosing is often fatal to the algae. Also note that Flourish Excel will melt anacharis and vallisneria plants if you have them.

Try looking at this topic if you go the flourish excel route.
