The big white spot appeared on this Venustus about 4 days ago, initially he had his fin stuck to his side, I assume it was stuck as he wasn't moving it> He now has movement but the fin is torn and as you can see its lumpy on outside and on bodyside of fin, today a small white spot has appeared on his pelvic fin. He is showing no signs of discomfort, no flashing, no drop in activity levels, no colour change, nothing. There are no other marks on his body and I dont think it is as a result of injury, although this is a Malawi tank its pretty peaceful and the more feisty mbuna don't bother the Haps who have a nice clear stretch of open water away from the rocks.

I have searched and searched and keep coming up with Ich, but the typical explanation and description being like grains of salt on the skin doesn't make any sense for this. No other fish showing any signs of any problems.

Symptoms are very similar to an issue I had recently with my keyhole cichlid. I too kept coming back with the answer of ich although it didn't seem to match.

I turned the temp up to 29-30 just incase and the problem seems to be going away and is now nearly none existent.

If its a small white cauliflower looking substance, attached to the fin or the base of the fin, its likely to be lymphosystis, which is a virus and as far as Im aware there is no medication for it.

One of my goldfish gets those lumps. They do tend to go away after a while. It definately isn't white spot - I originally thought it was when I first saw them appear.

Thanks guys think I'm going with lymphosystis, just can't believe the lack of decent photos of fish diseases on the net, very poor show.

Reading up on this disease it is a bit of a b*gger, I had cleaned out my 2nd tank only last week and had it sat ready to be turned into a Nano marine, but as of yesterday its home to this guy so I can keep an eye on him.
