I have a tropical set up with a gorgeous red betta that ive had for a couple weeks now, about 5 days ago whilst i was feeding bloodworm one of my frogs accidently slurped up part of the bettas fin, the betta swam away quickly, the tip of his fin is now slightly ragged, but since then he has been really quiet before he was a very active fish swimming here, there and everywhere all the time, now he pretty much stays in one corner of my tank right up under the surface of the water, i havent seen him eat since either, i thought he was unhappy, likely to die soon etc but then tonight he has starting blowing bubbles and building a nest (there is no female in the tank, he is the only betta), ive read that they only build nests when they are happy and healthy? so why the sudden character change? do they go quiet before the nest? or is there something else wrong with my fish :(

What temperature is the tank, how big is it, how long has it been set up and what is the filtration and the other tank mates?

Have you tested the water (or had it tested) and if so what were the results?

Sorry to barrage you with so many questions, but the more information we have, the better we can help your little guy :)

In the meantime, do a large (50% or more) water change with warm, dechlorinated water; always the first thing you should do if you're worried :good:

Hey, i did the 50% water change a couple days ago,

i think its a 30litre tank, temp is about 27, there is a filter in there but i couldnt tell you what type

i have the betta, 2 platys, 4 guppies, 1 cobra. 2 tetras, and 2 frogs in the tank, there is also a couple tenny tiny snails that appeared when i bought some live plants last week x

its been set up for about 6wks x

Your tank is very overstocked in all honesty...

I'd probably be doing 50% every other day if I were you. Get an amonnia test if you can (don't just let the shop test it for you, you need to be able to do it yourself)

How do you clean the filter out? Are you changing any of the insides of it?
