They are mostly pearly with large single black spots each side of their back and a red flash in their tails. They are about 2" long and very active, but not aggressive at all.

i think i have seen those. its a type of tetra i think? im not sure of the name though:(

Have a feeling they may be barbs.

No I don't remember head and tail light being the name on the tank in the shop
It began with S - sounded like sydontis, but obviously wasn't sydontis

Sounds like synodontis but they are catfish.

Yeah it sounded like that, but not that lol

lol. The closest I can find is the black spot barb

I think it is black-spot barb (Barbus Filamentosus).

er...how do I upload images?
Edit : Ok, found out

Ooh yeah could be that! I got the name a bit wrong lol, but I thought it was a barb, well done you!x

100% certain they are indeed Barbus filamentosa
very hardy and very active. do better in a long tank, say at least 4ft
once sexually mature (around 3.5 inch) they will spawn at the slightest decrease in water temperature.

here is a sexually male and female from my school
male (note the filaments on the dorsal fin)

female (note the lack of filaments)

Yeah I am thinking they ought really to go back to the shop - why don't they tell you these things when you buy them! x
