If I should or shouldn't do a large water change at this point in my cycle?
The tank is processing 4-5ppm of ammonia in 12 hrs my nitrates are at a constant 5 but my nitrite has been of the chart for a week?
Is Nitrite supposed to come down naturally or is a water change and fresh dose of ammonia required?
Thanks

Nope all seems fine to me, nitrite has a tentancy to stay really high for ages and then almost over night just drop dramatically... IMO i would just leave it be and just keep topping up the ammonia as you are and keep an eye on the stats aswell as the PH to make sure it isnt dropping to much :)

appreciate that Jen as was told to do a 70-90% water change earlier?!? was a little unsure.

Nah the only real need to do a water change is if you have a stall and the PH has dropped to low for the cycle to continue, doing a water change wont harm anythink, but it will just produce nitite again as the ammonia is been processed, the nitrite wont start processing if the bacteria isnt there so doing a water change IMO is basiaclly just changing the water to fresh and then waiting for the nitrites to raise again lol.

Hope that made sense lol :p

Yeh fishless cycling can become very teadious at times lol, im lucky enough to be able to clone to a virtual full cycle, but i am actually cycling a tank right now with a little mature media because i have no rush and i need it to take its time pmsl.

It will get there m8, i know exactly how you feel, tank sitting there collecting dust with no fish :(, but in the long run you will look back and think it was all worth while ;)

I started mine with some mature biorb media and its only in its tenth day so just gotta wait for those bl**dy nitrites to come down and i'm home free......I'd love to get on a thread and tell people my cycle only took 2 weeks tho PMSL

I agree with Jen, unless your PH has stalled your cycle, no need for a water change just yet

Thanks Gaz,
Have you any pics of your tank?

LOL, your tank is coming along well for 10 days, nitrite as gaz says tends to take a little longer than ammonia to clear but it will, you will just wake up one morning, test and think woohoo!!! lol

Good luck m8 and hope it cycles soon for you :)

yeah mate, heres how the tank looks at the minute

It looks like brown algae all over the right side of my tank, but its just the reflection off of my red curtains.

Nice, I like the long grass at the back I'm thinking of putting some in mine instead of a background print as such I just need to reduce the flow of my filter or plant it really densely.

I'd go for a background anyway if I were you mate, hides all the wires and stuff.

The plant is a Vallisneria Spiralis

Good point, i'm going to get the cables tidied at the big water change and look for a background in the maentime then, are backrounds readily available at LFS or is there anywhere online that does them?

Hi ,
Every fish shop i been in sell them ..You will have no problems getting what you want .. All different ones as well . Just measure your tank and allow a little over trim to size Regards Zac
