Hello! It's me again... I am still fighting to handle this white stuff on George's fins (it's fuzzy and white/grey. In some places it forms little strings as if some little treads got caught on his fins). I have been going back and forth on the emergency forum for a week with Wilder and have also gotten some answers here. Basically George has this white fluffy stuff growing on his fins, which also forms little white strings in some spots. From my description Wilder originally diagnosed that it was was columnaris rather than a fungus and I started treating with Maracyn 5 days ago. As per recommendation on this forum, I have been doing a 50% water change and re-medicating with Maracyn daily. Well actually - I have been going 50% and 100% water changes alternating. I have a pinewood airstone in there right now as treatment of Columnaris requires oxygen increase. It seems to give off little wood shavings and after 48 there is so much stuff floating in the water that I just have to change it all out.

Anyways, I have been dosing Maracyn for 5 days and Pimafix for 2 days, but the stuff does not seem to be responding to anything.

I do not have a good camera to show a clear close-up. Below is the best I can do:

Water temperature is at 75. Fish is active and eating with great appetite, but the white stuff that started on the very tips of his fins keeps growing towards his body. He seemed to have a little cut right where the top fin meets the body and it is growing there too. Other than this particular spot, it is so far only on his fins, but moving in towards the body ...

Does anybody have an idea of what this is and how it should be treated? I am getting worries because so far it has not responded to anyhing.

Wilder's last recommendation was to use Maracyn and Maracyn 2 or to switch to tetra cyclite...

Thank you! So what do you suggest to treat it with? I've searched on the net and called LFS's. Some poeple say Melafix, some say Betta fix, some say tetracycline and others say Jungle fungus eliminator. What do you two use for this kind of stuff? Sorry - I know this is a "common" ailment but it is the first time I am dealing with something like this ...

Lucky for me i have never had fin rot on any of my fish and wouldnt know what to use. Espicaly on a betta better waiting for a answer from someone else for that lol... Though I have heard alot of people say Melafix but half a dose

Hope he gets better

Dear CTlovesKS, LOL! Well, thanks for the attempt. Just for the record MY betta has never had fin rot or any disease for that matter either. This is my friend's fish, who nearly died and I got him all chipper again except for this stuff on his fins : ( .

Well I am hoping that maybe one of those big-hearted forum members who rescue mistreated betta from the pet shops will have an answer ...

Well i have only just started to rescue them and this is my first Peach lol... The only thing wrong with Peach was niped tail and very stressed. But if I can sell him then I will love to rescue more which I probaly will

Well, that is very kind of you. Good luck!

So can anybody recommend to me the most effective medication for severe case of fin rot?

Bump. Anybody...? What would yo u use for advanced fin rot?

Melafix wont cure finrot but you can use it after at half dose to repair the fins. I'm not sure exactly what to use but i'm sure tetra do a finrot med, i wish i could help more but all i know is that melafix wont cure finrot just help heal it.

Good luck :good:

Thanks for that! I joined a few minutes ago, so I'm new to this

I think you have to use myxazin to actually cure the problem then melafix to help with healing :)

Thanks everybody. I checked google images for pics of columnaris since this is what Wilder in the emergency forum thinks it is and the photos do look like the stuff on George. He did not respond to Maracyn or Pimafix, so will try a treatment of tetracycline starting tonight. If that does not bring an improvement, I will go to fungal remedies like Jungle fungus eliminator. If anybody has any particular input on columnaris I would definitely like to know.
